About Mr Dimitrios Moschonas
Personal Profile
Mr Dimitrios Moschonas was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Royal Surrey Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2019. Alongside his practice there, he is also a member of the pelvic Uro-Oncology team and is the robotic Urology fellowship coordinator at Royal Surrey County Hospital.
Training and Appointment
He graduated from University of Patras, Greece and undertook specialist Urology training in Athens, Greece. He was awarded his PhD degree with Honours from the University of Athens Medical School and completed a thesis on “Impact of metabolic disturbances and glycotoxins on male reproductive system.”
Mr Moschonas pursued advanced sub-specialty training in Urological Oncology in Oxford University Hospitals. After completing a fellowship in robotic pelvic uro-oncology at Royal Surrey Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, a centre of excellence for minimal invasive surgery, he worked as a locum consultant for two years.
Mr Moschonas specialises in robotic surgery for the treatment of prostate and bladder cancer. His training has enabled him to manage most aspects of male and female general urology problems and stones, as well as diagnosis and treatment of pelvic cancer. He also treats patients with paediatric foreskin problems in his NHS practice.
He has widely published in basic science, urological and oncological fields and his most recent publication was on patient satisfaction around robot-assisted radical prostatectomy. Mr Moschonas’ current focus is on novel biomarkers in prostate and bladder cancer. He is involved in national trials of robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy.
Current Practice
Most recently Mr Moschonas has introduced the new technique of Rezum treatment for benign prostate hyperplasia in his department. This is a minimally invasive cutting-edge procedure that uses water vapor ablation to reduce the swelling and size of an enlarged prostate, a relatively common condition in men over 50 years of age.
Mr Moschonas also started transperineal prostate biopsies under local anaesthetic at the Royal Surrey. These procedures involve the removal of a sample of tissue from the prostate, to be examined under a microscope, to identify any cancer cells. In addition, he is now offering fusion-guided targeted prostate biopsies with the aim of improving prostate cancer diagnostics.
The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/ultrasound fusion-guided biopsy procedure enables Mr Moschonas to take advantage of the best of two technologies — MRI and ultrasound — simultaneously during a prostate biopsy. Using a device that “fuses” a recent MRI of the patient’s prostate with a real-time ultrasound image, he can see the prostate in 3D when performing the biopsy which, in turn, allows greater clarity and more precise targeting of specific suspicious tumours. This biopsy method is beneficial to patients whose previous tests have indicated a strong possibility of prostate cancer.
