He has a broad range of interests in the management of chronic pain conditions. He utilises a personalised and tailored approach to pain management, delivers precision pain diagnosis and creates a pragmatic /holistic management plan that incorporates elements of explanation, addressal of beliefs and expectations, supported self-management, medications, injections, physical therapy or psychological support. He is trained to carry out advanced pain interventions/injections/procedures and is very keen about integrating rehabilitation with injections to promote patient recovery.
Dr Srivastava graduated in Medicine (1991), served in the Indian Navy and completed his MD Anaesthesiology from the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) ,Pune, India in 2000. Thereafter he undertook further advanced training in Anaesthetics in Sheffield (Yorkshire) and Belfast (Northern Ireland) deaneries in the UK. He undertook his advanced training in Pain Medicine as a Macmillan fellow at the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Liverpool. During this time at Liverpool, he also completed his Masters in Pain Medicine from the University of Cardiff and was awarded the Fellowship (FFPMRCA) of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, London.
Dr Srivastava discovered the lady who does not feel pain and published the findings relating to unique genetic defect and raised endocannabinoids in 2019. This paper was quoted extensively in the global media /newspaper and journals as opening a potential new way to treat pain. Dr Srivastava was awarded the prize for the best pain research paper in Scotland in 2019 and holds the patent for this discovery. He has performed research/quality improvement in areas that is likely to improve pain patients’ well-being at the coal face and published on the topics of amputation pain, neuropathic pain, Intensive care pain, lidocaine therapy, neuromodulation therapy, cancer pain, and genetics of pain amongst others. Currently he is researching means of reducing anxiety and improving pain after surgery utilising Virtual reality (headsets) immersive therapy. He retains a strong research interest and has been a peer reviewer for major peer reviewed journals. He is currently a member of the scientific committee of the British Pain Society.
Dr Srivastava has been a member of the Professional Standards Committee (2017-2023) of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, London where he contributed to the CSPMS ( Core Standards in Pain Management) document that lays down the gold standards for pain services in the UK. He was the chair of the working group of the GAP Analysis group that compared the current state of UK pain management services compared to the gold standard and published in 2024. Previously (2021) he was the co-chair of the UK national guidance on managing complex pain patients on opioids through surgery (Surgery and Opioid guidance). He has been awarded a Faculty commendation in 2024 for his work with the Faculty of Pain Medicine.
Dr Srivastava has a strong interest in teaching and has been a speaker/faculty at local, regional and international courses/study days on the topic of pain management. He is the Chair of the Education sub-committee and events at the Faculty of Pain Medicine London where he organises training events and steers the national teaching programme in pain medicine for trainees.
