Her specialist neurology training took place at some of the UK’s most well-known institutions, including the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), King’s College Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London, and Hurstwood Park Neurological Centre in Haywards Heath. In 2010-2011, she was appointed to the prestigious National Treasure post in Neurorehabilitation, a role that allowed her to develop expertise in rehabilitation strategies in complex neurological conditions. Dr. Alvares joined University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (formally Western Hospitals NHS Trust) as a Consultant Neurologist, serving at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester from 2011 to 2023, alongside an honorary contract with Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals. During her tenure, she played a key role in patient care, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of neurological conditions
She initiated and ran a local headache clinic under the NHS, audited and participated in establishing local guidelines regarding headache referrals, and has presented at the international headache academy in Leiden in 2014 as well as participated in research on classification of chronic headache, and talking at the 12th Headache masterclass in London in 2019. A passionate educator, Dr. Alvares has been actively involved in training the next generation of doctors. She has taught numerous medical students through the Kent, Surrey, and Sussex Deanery education programme, served as an educational supervisor for foundation year trainees, and contributed to neurology training for NHS doctors.
Additionally, she has played a vital role in consultant recruitment as a representative for the Royal College of Physicians in the appointment of NHS Consultant Neurologists. Dr. Alvares is dedicated to helping people through exceptional patient care, medical education, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of her patients and the wider medical community
