About Mr David Wood

Mr - Personal Profile

After graduating in 2005 from University of Liverpool Medical School, Mr David Wood trained in Orthopaedics on the South Yorkshire Rotation of the Yorkshire Deanery. After rotating through all the core areas, he focused on conditions involving the hip and knee.

On completion of Specialist Orthopaedic Training in February 2018, he undertook a year’s Fellowship at Nottingham University Hospitals with internationally renowned surgeons, Mr AJ Manktelow, Mr PJ James and Mr BV Bloch, focusing on high volume elective primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty in both the simple and complex patient.

In February 2019, Mr Wood was appointed as a Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospital. Here, he successfully performed high-volume hip and knee arthroplasty with excellent patient outcomes. He was appointed as a Substantive Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Chesterfield Royal Hospital in September 2020, taking over from the retiring Mr Iain Scott.

He enjoys teaching and training, and is a Clinical and Educational Supervisor to medical students and doctors in training from both Sheffield and Nottingham Universities. He has also been the Educational Supervisor to the Orthopaedic Theatre Surgical Assistants and Pharmacists undergoing advanced training.

He is an active member of the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Hip Society and has presented posters and oral presentations focusing on Orthopaedics in general, and lower limb arthroplasty. This experience ensures that he stays up to date and practices evidence based medicine, particularly important when choosing implants for patients.

He was awarded the British Hip Society/Stryker Travelling Fellowship in Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery. This offered him placements across the UK, Europe and USA in hospitals undertaking this specialist surgery in high volumes.

In 2019, he was invited to join Depuy/Synthes Future Hip Surgeons Programme, where a small group of Consultants in the UK were selected to visit and be mentored by some of the premier hip surgeons in Europe.

Outside of work, Mr Wood is a proud Yorkshireman, having been born and brought up in Sheffield. He enjoys spending time with his family and walking in the countryside with his 2 Dalmatians. Mr Wood enjoys watching wildlife, gardening and is a keen sports enthusiast, playing cricket during the summer and badminton during the winter.
