About Dr David Smith

Personal Profile

Dr Smith trained in medicine at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School in London. He went on to complete his specialist cardiology training at the Bristol Heart Institute. During this time, he also undertook research into the then-novel imaging technique of CT Coronary Angiography, a non-invasive scan used to assess coronary and cardiac anatomy. This technology is now widely used and recommended by NICE as a first-line investigation for chest pain.

He completed further specialist training in coronary intervention, developing expertise in minimally invasive procedures to treat heart artery disease. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians in 2017 and is a member of the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society.

Dr Smith has worked as a Consultant Cardiologist for the NHS at Worcestershire Royal Hospital since 2012. He has extensive experience in all aspects of general cardiology, including the assessment and treatment of angina, palpitations, dizziness, and valvular heart disease. He takes a patient-centred and holistic approach, focusing on individual needs and ensuring patients feel fully informed and supported.

He is an active member of the emergency heart attack service, providing primary angioplasty (commonly known as stenting) for patients presenting with acute heart attacks. He regularly works in the cardiac catheter laboratory and has significant experience in complex coronary stenting procedures.

In 2015, he established the region’s chronic total occlusion (CTO) service, specialising in the treatment of completely blocked coronary arteries that can cause long-term and difficult-to-treat angina. He also leads the Trust’s chest pain assessment service and works closely with radiology colleagues to deliver CT coronary angiography services.

In addition to his NHS work, Dr Smith provides private cardiology services with access to a full range of diagnostic and treatment options. He has developed strong professional links with regional cardiac specialists and cardiac surgeons to ensure patients can be referred quickly for further treatment when needed.

He also leads the region’s only private Cardiac CT service, offering advanced imaging to support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning for heart conditions at Droitwich Spa Hospital.
