Personal profile

Professor David O'Brien is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Clinical Professor of Medical Education.

Having completed general cardiology and interventional cardiology training in both the UK and Canada, he returned to work as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist in the UK.

He has held numerous management positions within the NHS locally, including those of Clinical Lead and Clinical Director for Cardiology at ULHT. He was appointed Clinical Professor in Medical Education at the University of Nottingham in 2023 and is currently the Director of Admissions and Clinical Vice Dean at the Lincoln Medical School. He divides his time between his clinical cardiology practice and work for the University of Nottingham and Lincoln Medical Schools in pursuing his passion for selection for medical school, medical education and training.

His cardiology practice covers all aspects of general cardiology, with a special interest in the management of coronary artery disease and in particular, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI/Angioplasty). He is an advocate of the use of the radial artery in the arm, rather than the traditional femoral (leg) approach and uses the radial artery in the majority of his interventional procedures.  He also holds SCCT level 2 accreditation in cardiac CT.
