He graduated from the University of Edinburgh with MBChB and an Honours Degree in Biochemistry. He completed seven years of cardiology training at world renowned Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, which is the biggest cardiothoracic transplant centre in the UK. During his training in Interventional Cardiology, he undertook a Fellowship at one of Europe’s most prestigious cardiac centres, the Herzzentrum (Heart Centre) in Leipzig, Germany.
As an Interventional Cardiologist in University Hospital Hairmyres, he teaches coronary intervention to trainees who rotate from the West of Scotland and to European interventional fellows.
In addition to cardiology subspecialties, Dr MacDougall has an interest in lipidology, for which he is the Lead Clinician in South Lanarkshire. His service offers genetic testing for Familial Hypercholesterolaemia, a condition that can result in premature coronary artery disease, heart attacks and reduced life expectancy. As part of a preventive cardiology strategy, he also advises regarding lifestyle changes to improve patients’ cholesterol profiles with or without the need for pharmacotherapy.
