About David Stoker

Personal Profile

Professor David Stoker has been in private practice at The Cavell and Kings Oak Hospitals since 1995. His current clinical work focuses on upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, particularly gastroscopy, and consultations for abdominal and groin hernias. He no longer performs surgery but continues to provide expert diagnostic and advisory services, with referrals from both NHS and private patients.

He holds a weekly clinic every Wednesday at Cavell Hospital and a separate weekly gastroscopy list. Although he does not offer emergency services, he maintains a well-supported private practice with a secretary available daily.

Professor Stoker graduated from Edinburgh University and completed surgical training in Edinburgh and London, including roles at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, West Middlesex, and Barts. He developed expertise in gastro-oesophageal reflux, endoscopy, and ERCP during a research post with the Royal Navy.

Appointed Consultant Surgeon at North Middlesex University Hospital in 1995, he held clinical, academic, and leadership roles, including Associate Medical Director, Divisional Director, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at UCL. He founded the Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Unit at UCL following centralisation of cancer services in 2003.

He later served as Undergraduate Sub-Dean and Director of Medical Education at North Middlesex and has played a key role in teaching and assessment for both UCL and international medical students. In 2011, he was appointed Professor of Surgery at St George’s International University, where he now serves as UK Associate Dean of Clinical Studies, overseeing surgical education at 14 UK hospitals and leading virtual learning for over 100 students.

From 2015 to 2020, he was also the Cancer Lead for his NHS Trust and chaired the Cancer Board.
