About Daniela Tonucci

Personal Profile

Dr Daniela Tonucci is a consultant in chronic pain and anaesthesia, whose treatments include medication, physical therapy and pain-relieving injections. Her specialist interests include neuropathic pain, cancer pain and PENS (percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) therapy.

Daniela is also interested in pain psychology and the mindfulness-based techniques that can be used to deal with it. As and where appropriate, she can discuss with patients the viability of, and how to access additional sources of, pain-relief including physiotherapy, osteopathy and acupuncture.

Dr Tonucci also treats patients with nerve pain (neuropathy) and fibromyalgia; partly expressed as pain that can be felt anywhere in the body for which there is not one or no clear-cut cause.

Training and Appointment

Dr Daniela Tonucci attended St Michael's Convent School in North London and graduated as a doctor from Bristol University in 1995. Before starting anaesthesia training she gained valuable experience in paediatrics, general medicine and emergency medicine, including a year in Sydney, Australia specialising in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. In 2001, Dr Tonucci began specialist training in anaesthesia at the Bristol School of Anaesthesia.

Dr Tonucci undertook structured pain training at the Royal United Hospital, Bath, and continued advanced pain training with a senior pain fellowship at the Imperial NHS Trust, London. Her fellowship training was in chronic pain medicine with advanced cancer pain and palliative care pain management. Later Dr Tonucci gained the Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. She was later appointed as a Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia at Royal Surrey County Hospital where she developed the Cancer Pain Service and intrathecal drug delivery service.

Research and clinical interests

Dr Tonucci is interested in neuromodulation, which includes radiofrequency denervation of lumbar facets and sacroiliac joints, and in cancer and neuropathic pain. She is a keen educator and trained as an educational supervisor, and enjoys teaching. She regularly lectures health professionals on chronic pain management at the University of Surrey, and presents nationally and internationally.

She has been involved with a primary care trust developing guidelines for the treatment of neuropathic pain and also works closely with local GPs, regularly running teaching sessions for them and other health professionals.

Dr Tonucci has published extensive research in the UK and internationally, and is currently involved in a Drug Science research programme, Project Twenty21, which aims to create the country’s largest body of evidence for the effectiveness and tolerability of medical cannabis.
