As someone who experiences hip pain himself, Dan is passionate about helping people understand the causes of their joint issues and how to manage them - focusing on staying healthy and strong to delay or avoid surgery where appropriate. However, when joint replacement or revision surgery (a second-time procedure) becomes the right option, Dan believes that having the right information at the right time is key. It enables patients to prepare effectively, rebuild strength, and return to the activities they enjoy.
He completed his training in South Wales and the South West of England, and has gained international experience in New South Wales, South Africa, the United States, and Oxford.
He joined the faculty of the University or British Columbia in Vancouver for a 12-month fellowship in 2008 where the lessons from one of his research papers went on to shape his thoughts and career. This paper is worth a closer look...
The study combined two of Dan’s passions studying people returning to sport following joint replacement. His team looked at the factors before operation that predicted a return to sport one year after joint replacement. They worked with and studied over 700 patients.
A range of patients with first- and second-time hip and knee replacements, with different implants operated on by different surgeons using a number of different techniques were analysed.
And the (quite surprising) result..?
None of those surgical factors made a difference to outcome following surgery. Getting back to sport in this case.
So what did make a difference..?
Patient factors. It’s people that made the biggest difference to their own health outcome.
And that one finding opened Dan’s eyes to what really makes a difference if any of us come to thinking about joint replacement. Dan says:
‘That one result has influenced my treatment philosophy ever since… and continues to help me look after myself, my friends and family and thousands of my patients’.
His master’s degree thesis analysing hip resurfacing is part of a strong portfolio of published research. He’s gone on to contribute clinical expertise to national and international journal review and several medical device review boards. More recently as Vice Chair of the European Commission Expert Panel in Orthopaedic surgery.
Clinical review work continues to provide insights and a deep understanding of what works and what doesn't. His career is built on UK leading clinical outcomes- high gains in pain and function, and low revision rates following surgery. Dan worked in Cornwall from 2009, moving up to Somerset with his family in late 2023.
Dan will want to focus on getting you the very best clinical outcome. That is from the very first twinges of hip and knee pain right through to joint replacement and well beyond. If you really need it, he’ll put your joint replacement in the context of your everyday life and your lifetime.
At every stage of your clinical assessment and pathway, his team will want to ensure optimisation of the evidence-based factors that will make a difference to you.
One satisfied customer says:
“I’M NOW MAINTAINING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE WITHOUT CHRONIC AND CONSTANT PAIN, I HAVE MY LIFE BACK AND IT’S AMAZING.”
Outside of work Dan’s a keen runner and cyclist. So, keeping his own hip pain settled with a set of evidence-based tools remains a daily priority for him. With a young family he wants 40 more years enjoying all that the outdoors has to offer.
Dan has therefore invested in writing about everything hip and knee. He invites you to join 400 other weekly readers of his (free) Lifetime Hip and Knee Newsletter
