About Dr Dan McKenzie

Personal Profile

Dr Dan McKenzie is a Consultant Cardiologist based in Bath and Bristol with a specialist interest in complex angioplasty. He also works the NHS at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust.

Dr McKenzie provides a contemporary, evidence-based service, that is patient-focused, to investigate and treat a broad range of cardiovascular problems. These include the investigation and management of chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, and fainting.

His sub-specialty is coronary intervention - using wires, balloons, and stents to treat narrowing within coronary arteries. He is a high-volume operator and performs the majority (94%) of his cases through the radial artery, which is proven to be the safest route. He has an excellent outcome and safety record with a complication rate below those predicted in the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society (BCIS) statistical model (1.4% actual vs. 2.6% predicted).

The most important person during any investigation or procedure is always the patient and Dr McKenzie is strongly engaged with governance and quality improvement to ensure that teams work effectively to provide the best patient care possible.  This includes all forms of communication throughout.

Dr McKenzie is closely involved in the education and training of Junior Doctors and contributes to several National and International research trials and registries. He is the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society (BCIS) Treasurer and has been on Council and the BCIS Training and Education Group for 5 years.  BCIS is the national society responsible for training the next generation of interventional cardiologists.

Outside work, he is a keen sportsman and cycles, swims, and runs regularly. He has run many half and full marathons, cycled from London to Paris, and participates in Sportives most years.  In 2024 he completed the Outlaw half-distance triathlon. He has 5 children and spends as much time as possible with them, supporting their busy social and sporting lives.
