Mr Craig Mackay is an experienced consultant colorectal and general surgeon. He provides expert care using laparoscopic (keyhole), robotic, and open surgical techniques.
He sees patients at Albyn Hospital and Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Mr Mackay offers diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of bowel and general surgical conditions, including:
  • Colorectal (bowel) cancer

  • Laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery
  • Robotic colorectal surgery (carried out at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary)
  • Open surgery for complex cases

Training and Qualifications

Mr Mackay graduated in Medicine from the University of Aberdeen in 2007 and and undertook his postgraduate training in the North of Scotland. Before medicine, he studied Physiology and Sport Science at the University of Glasgow which remains an area of significant personal interest.
 

Research in Bowel Cancer

Mr Mackay has a strong academic background in colorectal cancer research and was awarded a prestigious Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellowship. For this, he undertook a Cancer Research UK funded project studying cell signalling pathways in the development of colorectal cancer, which lead to the award of his PhD from the University of Dundee in 2015.  He has maintained a strong interest in research and output, frequently publishing in peer reviewed journals. He has also represented his department many times by presenting work at international conferences. 

Teaching and Endoscopy Training

Mr Mackay is actively involved in medical education. He is a faculty member of the National Endoscopy Training Programme, which improves colonoscopy training in Scotland. He is also a faculty member on numerous surgical courses, and an integral part of his role is the supervision and training of junior doctors and medical students.
