About Chuk Abraham-Igwe

Mr Chuk Abraham-Igwe is a highly skilled consultant colorectal and general surgeon based at Heartlands Hospital, part of the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, and serves as a military surgeon at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Birmingham. In addition to his NHS role, he practices privately at HCA The Harborne Hospital and The Priory Hospital in Birmingham. With a medical career spanning over 25 years, he has worked across both military and civilian healthcare settings, focusing on advanced laparoscopic and open colorectal surgery, complex hernia repair, and emergency general surgery. Known for his commitment to enhancing patient outcomes, Mr Abraham-Igwe has led Enhanced Recovery Programmes and prehabilitation initiatives, including the introduction of Surgery School at Heartlands Hospital.
He completed his FRCS in General Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2010, following an MSc in Surgical Science with Distinction from Imperial College London in 2005, and his medical degree from the University of Nigeria in 1993. His clinical expertise covers a broad range of colorectal procedures for both cancer and benign conditions, and he is a core member of the colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team. Additionally, he has developed a specialist focus on complex abdominal wall hernia surgery, where he utilises advanced laparoscopic techniques, and provides comprehensive emergency surgical care in a high-demand hospital environment.
Mr Abraham-Igwe’s military career has included extensive deployments worldwide, supporting critical operations in locations such as Kabul, South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Iraq, and Afghanistan. These roles, often under challenging conditions, included non-combatant evacuation operations, peacekeeping missions, and emergency medical support during crises such as the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone. His experience in these settings has honed his expertise in military trauma surgery, an area in which he remains actively engaged.
As an approved GMC trainer, Mr Abraham-Igwe supervises medical students and surgical trainees, regularly instructing in laparoscopic techniques and other advanced surgical procedures. He has held leadership roles across surgical services, including Enhanced Recovery Lead at multiple NHS trusts and Clinical Governance Lead within the military medical services. During a deployment in Cyprus, he served as Acting Clinical Director, overseeing hospital operations and coordinating with local healthcare providers.
Beyond his professional commitments, Mr Abraham-Igwe has a passion for music, particularly jazz guitar, performing regularly with a local band. He is also dedicated to health promotion and charity work, organising events to address public health issues such as mental health awareness and actively participating in community outreach.
