Mr Chris Lee is a Consultant Gynaecologist with a specialist interest in minimal access surgery, based at Chelsfield Park Hospital and The Sloane Hospital - Circle Health. His NHS base is Kings College Hospital/ Princess Royal University Hospital. His interests span the whole remit of benign gynaecology including pelvic pain, endometriosis and adenomyosis, problematic periods and abnormal bleeding, fertility problems, menopause challenges, problems associated with fibroids, investigation and treatment following an abnormal smear test, utero-vaginal prolapse and pelvic floor issues. Whenever safe and feasible he aims to perform surgical treatment via a minimal access/ keyhole surgery approach, rather than by open, abdominal surgery.
Mr Lee trained and qualified at Imperial College London. He subsequently completed specialist training in London, based primarily at Kings College Hospital, including a two year Fellowship in gynaecological ultrasound.
He undertook a visiting fellowship at the Gynaecology Centre for Endometriosis, Villach, Austria in order to obtain more in depth training in advanced surgical techniques for the laparoscopic excision of endometriosis.
He has published widely, and regularly lectures on gynaecological diagnostic and surgical techniques, as well as training visiting surgeons from within the UK and abroad. He is also a regular invited faculty member at training courses and congresses throughout the UK, Europe and internationally.
Mr Lee is the Network Clinical Lead for the South East London Acute Provider Collaborative, overseeing gynaecology services at the three acute Trusts in SEL - Kings, Guys and St Thomas' and Lewisham and Greenwich Trusts. The crux of this work focuses on collaborative working across wide geographical areas, putting the patient at the centre of care delivery. Areas of focus have been improving care for women suffering with problems associated with menopause, modernising urogynaecology services with a focus on improving collaboration between primary care, allied services such as womens health physiotherapy and secondary care, and improving health education for patients, primary care colleagues and other gynaecologists through a variety of media.
Most recently he implemented a brand new London training centre supporting the accreditation of specialist nurse hysteroscopists in order to improve care for women with abnormal uterine bleeding.
Outside of work Mr Lee is a family man, enjoying skiing, tennis, boating, camping and all things outdoors with his wife and three boys.
Research interests
Mr Lee has published widely and has research interests that include diagnosis and management of uterine cavity abnormalities such as fibroids and polyps. He developed a novel technique for measuring submucous fibroid protrusion into the uterine cavity using three-dimensional saline infusion sonohysterography. His team were able to show that this is a reproducible technique for submucus fibroid classification prior to hysteroscopic fibroid resection. He was also able to demonstrate that there is no significant difference in accuracy of fibroid classification between diagnostic hysteroscopy and three-dimensional saline infusion sonohysterography.
His other main areas of research interest include laparoscopic hysterectomy, looking amongst other things at the successful implementation of a six-hour discharge policy following laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic hysterectomy for major congenital uterine anomalies and enlarged uteri and laparoscopic removal of the cervix following previous laparoscopic subtotal hysterectomy.
Other areas of research interest include early pregnancy problems, adnexal pathology and excision of urinary tract endometriosis
In 2023 Mr Lee led a large project implementing a same day discharge pathway for laparoscopic hysterectomy across Greater London.
Qualifications
Additional Training
His particular area of interest and expertise is in the treatment of endometriosis using an evidence based approach for both medical and surgical treatment optimisation, including treatment of the most severe forms of the condition with multi-organ involvement, utilising a multi disciplinary approach with bowel surgeons and urologists where indicated.
Whenever safe and feasible surgical treatment will always be via a minimal access/ keyhole surgery approach.
Above all else, Mr Lee values kindness, integrity and empathy during these undoubtedly stressful and worrying times for his patients.
