About Dr Christopher Holroyd

Personal Profile

Dr Holroyd graduated from the University of Southampton in 2000. Following this, his postgraduate rheumatology training was completed throughout the Wessex region, with accreditation in both rheumatology and general (internal) medicine in 2010. During his training he completed a clinical research fellowship at the Medical Research Council, Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton where he developed his research interests investigating the epidemiology of bone disease; He was awarded a PhD for his research in epidemiology in 2019, under this supervision of Professors Nicholas Harvey and Cyris Cooper.

Dr Holroyd was appointed as a Consultant Rheumatologist at University Hospital Southampton in 2012 and is currently the Clinical Lead for Rheumatology as well as the lead consultant for the biological therapies service for patients with inflammatory arthritis.

From 2011-2025 Dr Holroyd also provided a visiting rheumatology service in Guernsey on a monthly basis.

Dr Holroyd has a particular interest in inflammatory rheumatic disease, IBD-associated arthritis, biological therapies and osteoporosis; however his practice embraces all aspects of rheumatology including spinal pain, connective tissue disease, soft tissue rheumatism and fibromyalgia. He also have expertise in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound for the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and is certified EFSUM Level 1 by the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology.

Dr Holroyd has received numerous awards, including the British Society of Rheumatology Best Practice award, and was selected to represent rheumatology at the House of Lords Innovation within the NHS event. He has also received awards from the National Osteoporosis Society and the International Osteoporosis Federation for his research into bone disease.

Dr Holroyd continues to maintain a keen research interest and continues to publish scientific papers. He is principal investigator on several international clinical trials.

Dr Holroyd accepts referrals from both insured and self-pay patients and does not necessarily require a GP referral. He aims to treat all patients with a holistic approach to ensure a prompt diagnosis and successful management plan.

In his spare time, Dr Holroyd enjoys gardening and spending time with his family and his two Shih-Tzus.
