Key Treatments: Cardiology, Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, Cardiac MRI
I am a Consultant Cardiologist at Wythenshawe Hospital and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Manchester. I see private patients at The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle.
I assess and treat people with a wide range of heart-related symptoms, including breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations (awareness of the heart beating), dizziness, and blackouts. I frequently see older adults with heart conditions and have extensive experience in reviewing and simplifying medications, with a strong focus on improving symptoms, wellbeing, and quality of life.
I have particular expertise in a common but often under-recognised condition called heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). HFpEF can cause symptoms such as breathlessness, ankle swelling, and fatigue, and is frequently diagnosed late or missed altogether. I specialise in identifying this condition accurately and helping patients manage symptoms effectively.
I also specialise in heart diagnostics and am an expert in cardiac MRI scanning. Cardiac MRI is a highly detailed heart scan that allows us to assess heart structure, function, and health of the heart muscle. It can be especially helpful in finding the cause of symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, or palpitations when other tests have been inconclusive.
I have over 20 years of clinical experience. I qualified in Medicine with Honours from the University of Manchester in 2003 and also completed a first-class degree in Physiology. During my specialist cardiology training, I worked at leading centres including the Royal Brompton Hospital in London and the National Institutes of Health in the United States.
Alongside my clinical work, I lead a large research team focused on improving the understanding, early detection, and treatment of heart conditions. This work helps ensure that my clinical practice reflects the latest evidence and advances in cardiology. I have published extensively in international medical journals and regularly speak at national and international meetings. I am also closely involved in training future cardiologists and medical students.
