Dr Chetan Varma's qualified at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, University of London, now part of Imperial College, London. He was awarded several undergraduate prizes. He then underwent training at the major London teaching hospitals of Royal Brompton, Hammersmith, St Thomas' and Royal Free. Cardiology training was then undertaken at the London centres of excellence: St George's, The Royal Brompton and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. He was awarded a one year fellowship at Toronto General Hospital as well as a British Heart Foundation fellowship. He was appointed consultant cardiologist and senior lecturer at University of Birmingham in 2003.
He is currently Group Director for all Departments within Medicine and Emergency Care as well as practicing as a clinical cardiologist.
Dr Varma is an expert in managing coronary artery disease (CAD). He has particular experience of managing those at higher risk of developing CAD. He has specialist knowledge of refracting angina i.e. continuing chest pain secondary to CAD despite medical therapy. He has performed many thousands of coronary interventions percutaneously and has nationally recognised excellent outcomes for this. Procedures are performed radially to maximise comfort for the patient. He has an interest in angina with normal coronary arteries (ANOCA) and evaluation microvascular coronary arteries.
In addition he obtained a medical doctorate in the cardiomyopathy unit at St Georges Hospital, London. He wrote pioneering publications for advanced management of heart failure and pacing therapies. He has published original articles and editorials on all areas of clinical cardiology. More information is available birminghamheartclinic.co.uk.
