Professor Chelliah Selvasekar is a Consultant Colorectal, General and Robotic Surgeon with extensive experience in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of colorectal and gastrointestinal conditions.

He is a Consultant Colorectal and Robotic Surgeon at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, one of Europe's leading specialist cancer centres, and undertakes private practice at The Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle and Circle cheshire in Northwich.

His specialist interests include colorectal cancer, robotic and minimally invasive colorectal surgery, complex and reoperative colorectal surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, abdominal wall and hernia surgery, proctology and diagnostic and therapeutic lower gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Professor Selvasekar has particular expertise in minimally invasive surgery and has extensive experience in laparoscopic and robotic colorectal procedures. His approach is to provide patients with an individualised treatment plan, considering minimally invasive techniques whenever these are clinically appropriate.

He also sees patients with common colorectal and general surgical conditions, including rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habit, haemorrhoids, anal fissures and fistulas, perianal abscesses, pilonidal disease, diverticular disease and hernias. He performs colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy for investigation of gastrointestinal symptoms and colorectal disease.

Leadership and Education

Professor Selvasekar is President of the Association of Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALRSGBI) for 2025–2027.

He is also a Council Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Deputy Dean of its International Postgraduate Deanery.

Alongside his clinical practice, he has a major interest in surgical education, training, innovation and the development of robotic surgery. He is involved in national and international surgical education programmes and the training of surgeons in laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

He holds honorary academic appointments including Honorary Clinical Professor at Edge Hill University and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester.
