About Mr Chelliah Selvasekar

Personal Profile

Mr Selvasekar qualified in Madras, India and underwent basic surgical training in various hospitals in the UK. He did his specialist registrar rotation in the North West Deanery (Manchester).

Mr Selvasekar did 2 years of clinical research at University College London on minimally invasive treatment in the management of dysplastic lesions leading to MD from University of London. He spent a year as an International Clinical Colorectal Fellow at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, USA to gain experience in minimally invasive and complex colorectal surgery. Mr Selvasekar completed his surgical training at Christie Hospital to augment his clinical colorectal experience and has worked at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust from June last year.

He established laparoscopic colorectal surgery at Leighton Hospital with the support of his colleagues and performs laparoscopic colorectal surgery once or twice a week. He has performed over 150 laparoscopic colorectal resections to date. Mr Selvasekar is an ALSGBI-recognised preceptor to train consultants in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. He is currently preceptoring 2 colorectal surgeons in the North West. Mr Selvasekar has been instrumental in establishing an enhanced recovery programme by devising the protocol at Leighton Hospital based on his experience in the USA. He also offers surgical treatment for all aspects of general and colorectal surgery.

Mr Selvasekar is keen on surgical training and assessment and is currently doing a post-graduate certification course to enhance his teaching and training skills at Keele University. He is in the faculty of trainers at The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh on the surgical courses and is in the process of becoming an examiner for the MRCS.
