Dr Li graduated from Imperial College London in 1994, undertaking his pre-clinical studies at Queens’ College, Cambridge. After general medical training and obtaining his membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 1997, he completed his rheumatology/ general medicine rotation in London, working in renowned teaching hospitals including the Royal Free and University College Hospital, London.
Before being appointed to his current NHS substantive post in 2007 he completed his PhD studies at the Institute of Child Health, University College London working on immunobiology of muscles in inflammatory myopathies; during his research years he received additional training on connective tissue diseases at University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospitals.
Dr Li has been a consultant rheumatologist and physician at the Royal Surrey County Hospital since 2007. Beyond a busy clinical commitment, he has contributed to teaching and research, actively engaging in translational research, and has been the principal investigator for a number of Phase IIb and Phase II clinical studies in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).
SLE is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissues, causing widespread inflammation and tissue damage in the affected organs. It is what most people mean when they refer to having lupus.
