About Charles Maxwell-Armstrong

Personal Profile

Mr Maxwell-Armstrong qualified from Bristol University in 1991. His basic and higher surgical training were in Nottingham. He completed a Doctorate in colorectal cancer immunotherapy and was subsequently awarded a Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Fellowship year was at St Mark’s hospital, London and Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto. In 2002 he was appointed a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals. His main clinical interests are in the development of laparoscopic colorectal surgery for which he has a national reputation. He has also developed a pelvic floor service for Nottingham.

He was colorectal service lead for 7 years and ran year 3 of the Nottingham Medical degree course for 5 years. He is a member of the Council and Executive committees of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and Chairs the Multidisciplinary Clinical Committee.

Inflammatory Bowel disease Clinical Advisory Group and the National Bowel cancer audit Clinical Reference group.

Clinical Interests

Colorectal surgery: Haemorrhoids, anal fistulae, anal fissures, large bowel cancer screening and treatment, inflammatory bowel disease, functional bowel disorders, faecal incontinence, rectal evacuatory disorders, laparoscopic colorectal surgery, colonoscopy.

General surgery: umbilical and inguinal hernias, incisional hernias, cysts and lipomas.
