Carl Shakespeare has been a consultant cardiologist and general physician for 29 years in the setting of tertiary cardiac centres, specialist centres in London Teaching hospitals, a district General Hospital, and in a community cardiology setting as well.
Has had an extensive training in both invasive cardiology and general medicine in busy hospital settings. Although has wide sub-specialist expertise, has equally extensive experience in general medicine. This is important as patients often have significant other medical issues that may impact on cardiological symptoms and conditions.
Training
Specialist cardiology training was obtained in London at the Westminster Hospital, National Heart Hospital, St Thomas’s, St George’s, Royal London Hospital and the Royal Brompton Hospital.
Expertise
Having been a qualified doctor for over 40 years, has gained enormous experience in invasive procedures such as coronary angiography, transoesophageal echocardiography, intra-aortic balloon pumping, and pacemaker implantation. In addition, has had specialist training in cardiac CT angiography in the USA and Cardiac MRI imaging at the Royal Brompton Hospital. As a Fellow of the European Society of Hypertension (FESH), as deep knowledge in the management of hypertension.
Clinical Interests
As a cardiologist, has a wide experience in general cardiology with special reference to the appropriate use of relevant cardiac imaging. Has a specific interest in hypertension in view of his FESH.
As a consultant physician, has an interest in the management of associated general medical conditions that may interact with cardiac conditions
Qualifications
Current Position
Clinical lead at St Thomas’s in the NHS, providing cardiology services in SE London, overseeing cardiac investigations and weekly clinical assessment. Privately, has a clinic at the Lister Hospital in Chelsea and Blackheath Hospital in SE London. Honorary Professor of cardiology at Al-Quds Medical School in Jerusalem.
Research Experience
Previously a British Heart Fellowship recipient resulting in an MD at the University of London in the field of Autonomic Function in Silent Myocardial Ischaemia in 1994. Has 30 publications.
Other Achievements
Implemented telemedicine service for Prison Healthcare in 2000. Was awarded a National Prize for government sponsored: “Invest to Save”. Was President of the National Telemedicine Society in 2000.
