About Bernard (Ben) van Duren

Personal Profile

Mr Bernard (Ben) van Duren is a dual fellowship-trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip and knee arthritis requiring joint replacement. He also has a particular interest in disorders affecting the hip in younger patients. His NHS practice is based at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, City Hospital Campus.

Ben graduated from the University of Warwick in 2012 and completed his clinical, surgical, and specialist orthopaedic training in Oxford, London, and Yorkshire. After qualifying as a consultant, he undertook two years of advanced sub-specialist training with internationally recognised surgeons in Nottingham (Mr Andrew Manktelow and Mr Benjamin Bloch) and Northumbria (Mr Ajay Malviya). He further broadened his experience through visits to leading surgeons in France, Switzerland, and Germany to gain an understanding of the anterior approach to hip surgery.

In addition to his clinical expertise, Ben is a Chartered Engineer and completed a DPhil at Magdalen College, Oxford, focusing on aspects of total knee replacement design. He continues to pursue research aimed at improving implant design and surgical outcomes and is Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Engineering at the University of Leeds. He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and has presented his work widely at national and international conferences. His academic work directly informs his clinical practice.

Ben’s overarching philosophy is to help patients choose the most appropriate approach and implants to maximise the likelihood of the desired outcome. He also offers treatments for hip problems affecting younger patients such as femoroacetabular impingement, hip dysplasia, and labral tears.
