About Mr Benjamin Tan

Mr Benjamin Tan is a consultant surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. He joined the Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery unit in January 2017. Mr Tan graduated MB ChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery) from the University of Glasgow in 2003.
In 2012, Mr Tan was awarded an MD (Doctorate in Medicine) from the University of Edinburgh and his doctoral research was funded by a European Union research grant. His research into cancer cachexia led to several publications in medical journals.
Mr Tan undertook specialist surgical training in the East Midlands in general and upper GI surgery. He obtained his Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons in 2014 and completion of specialist surgical training (CCT) in 2016.
Prior to his appointment at the QE Hospital, Benjamin undertook an advanced oesophago-gastric fellowship at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Mr Tan is fully trained in laparoscopic and open operating with a specialist interest in complex oesophago-gastric conditions including: gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernias and oesophageal and gastric cancers.
He provides online teaching for the Masters of Surgical Sciences programme at the University of Edinburgh as well as tutoring third-year medical students from the University of Birmingham. Mr Tan retains an active interest in research on nutrition and body composition and its effects on outcome following oesophago-gastric cancer surgery.
