Dr Benjamin Smith is an experienced Paediatric Cardiologist who, holds a substantive consultant appointment at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. His training in Paediatric Cardiology was extensive and undertaken at several respected institutions.
Dr Smith graduated in 1998 from the University of Adelaide, Australia. He commenced training in Paediatric Cardiology in 2002 at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, having first completed a Diploma in Child Health. He then relocated to the United Kingdom and entered the British Paediatric Cardiology training program in 2004. He is dual-accredited to practice Paediatric Cardiology in Australasia and the United Kingdom and is a Fellow of both respective Royal Colleges. Following completion of the training program in Glasgow in 2009, Dr Smith undertook further sub-specialty training in congenital interventions in London at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust.
In 2010 Dr Smith returned to Glasgow take up a consultant appointment at the then Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill and he continues to practice at the Royal Hospital for Children in Govan. He works within a large team of health care professionals including Paediatric Cardiologists, congenital Heart Surgeons, Nursing staff and allied health care professionals. He provides inpatient and outpatient care as well as congenital interventions in all paediatric age groups. He also provides NHS outpatient consultations at several hospitals in the central belt and west of Scotland. He has contributed to the charitable provision of cardiac services to under-privileged children overseas.
Dr Smith is extensively involved in training Paediatric Cardiologists. He is the Training Program Director for the specialty in Scotland and is Chair of the Paediatric Cardiology Specialist Advisory Committee at the JRCPTB, an affiliate of the Royal College of Physicians of London responsible for training physicians throughout the United Kingdom. Ben is an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Glasgow and regularly supervises medical students. He has contributed to the medical literature through published journal articles and textbooks and has been an invited speaker at international conferences.
Paediatric Cardiology is very much a hands-on discipline with a need for well-developed bedside clinical and investigative skills. As an experienced Paediatric Cardiologist, Ben provides consultations for all Paediatric Cardiology presentations and investigations.
