About Benjamin Bloch

Personal Profile

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in hip and knee surgery, particularly focussing on treatment of arthritis. I perform 500 hip and knee replacements per year and was the first surgeon in the U.K. to perform knee replacement surgery with the advanced Velys Robotic Assisted Solution.

This robotic assistance improves the accuracy of the implant position, and is associated with a reduction in pain and improved early recovery and function. I routinely use the Velys robot for my total and partial knee replacements.

I have a special interest in revision (re-do) knee replacement surgery, and am the lead knee surgeon for the East Midlands Specialist Orthopaedic Network. I perform approximately 50 revision knee replacements per year.

I also have an interest in management of arthritis in the younger patients, and will offer treatments such as partial knee replacement (unicompartmental or patello-femoral replacements), as well as options like cementless hip and knee replacement prostheses where the bone grows into the implant where these are appropriate.

I monitor the outcomes of my treatments, and my patients’ outcomes are consistently better than the national average.

I also enjoy teaching and training, and regularly give lectures to medical students, doctors in training and allied health professionals. I am regularly part of the faculty at international conferences, and teaching courses. I have delivered live surgical demonstrations in the U.K., Europe, India and China. I am also involved in knee replacement implant design and development.

I am actively involved in research into hip and knee surgery. I have published in respected orthopaedic journals and presented my work at national and international meetings. I have been awarded prizes from the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the British Hip Society for my presentations.
