About Mr Bala Piramanayagam

Personal Profile

Mr Bala Piramanayagam completed his specialist general and colorectal surgical training in the West Midlands deanery working across a number of prestigious institutes including the University Hospital of Birmingham and University Hospital of North Midlands. On completing his higher surgical training secured the prestigious Laparoscopic Colorectal fellowship at Bradford Royal Infirmary gaining considerable experience in advanced laparoscopic procedures and endoscopy.

Mr Bala Piramanayagam published his research thesis and has a number of presentations both in national and international meetings. He was also awarded the prestigious British Association of Oncology travelling fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons to present his research work

He is the Clinical Director of surgery at George Eliot Hospital and extremely committed to service improvement and training. Under his leadership the surgical department at the George Eliot Hospital has shown significant expansion and has been awarded Good rating by the CQC. He currently leads the directorate which includes services in General Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Breast Surgery, Urology, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery and Opthalmology.  He is an accredited laparoscopic and endoscopy trainer and a senior member of the national general surgery Speciality Advisory Committee (SAC) responsible for surgical training in the United Kingdom.

Currently he is  also the training programme director for general surgery in the West Midlands supervising surgical trainees in the rotation. He is a member of elite group of examiners for FRCS in General and Colorectal surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons  as well as an examiner at Warwick Medical school.

His surgical interest apart from general and colorectal surgery are advanced laparoscopic surgery and colonoscopy .

He is happily married with two children and lives in Sutton Coldfield. Outside medicine his interests are cricket and classical music.
