Dr Badrinathan Chandrasekaran is a Consultant Cardiologist who works at the Wiltshire Cardiac Center at the Great Western Hospital NHS trust.  He is the clinical lead for the Cardiology department, the head of echocardiography and the Director for Research and Innovation at the trust. 

 He has a wide experience in cardiology and is happy to see any potential cardiac conditions including palpitations, dizziness, chest pain and breathlessness.  He sees both insured and self-pay patients as well as self-referrals. This breadth of scope and considerable experience in general medicine throughout his training allows a holistic comprehensive approach to patient care.

Dr Chandrasekaran’s area of expertise are heart failure, simple and complex pacemaker implantation and echocardiography. He can offer a comprehensive cardiology opinion encompassing the latest treatments which is due to his enthusiastic participation in research.  He believes in a patient centered approach and consultations are a tailored for shared care with active patient collaboration. 

 He graduated from Guys & St Thomas’ Medical school with honors and worked in Cambridge and Papworth where he decided to specialise in Cardiology. His cardiology training was in the Wessex Region and he worked in Swindon as a Registrar. He received the Robert Luff Fellowship for research at Imperial college and Royal Brompton hospital looking at novel biomarkers in heart failure and cardiac resynchronisation therapy. He then completed his cardiac training with advanced fellowships in heart failure and electrophysiology at the Wessex Cardiothoracic center in Southampton.  Delighted to return to Swindon as a consultant in 2011 he has set up the stress echo and 3D echo service. Under his leadership the echo department has also achieved national accreditation in 2013.  Since 2018 he has been the clinical Director for Research and Innovation at Great Western Hospital NHS trust and been instrumental in imbedding research into the fabric of clinical practice at the trust.  As the clinical lead for the Cardiology department, he is responsible for making sure the local service continues to provide excellent cardiac care, keeping abreast of the expanding technologies and innovations which improve patient outcomes. 

His expertise in echo is consolidated with participation in research at a local and national level.  GWH was one of the highest recruiters in the EVAREST studies which have established contemporary stress echo as an excellent and accurate modality for assessment and prognosis in coronary artery disease.

With his appointment the complex pacing service has been repatriated to Swindon and working with his colleague he has been instrumental in bringing the latest technology and innovations in pacing therapy to the local population.  He has a special interest in the interventional approach to cardiac resynchronisation therapy and conduction system pacing.  This interest is consolidated by participation in several international studies in this field as a principal investigator with involvement in teaching and proctoring others to learn these techniques.

He is a regularly asked to present at national conferences.  In recognition of his efforts, he was awarded a national clinical excellence award in 2023.
