About Mr Atul Sabharwal

Personal Profile

Atul is a Consultant Paediatric & Neonatal Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. Formerly the Speciality Adviser in Paediatric Surgery to the Chief Medical Officer, he is currently the Clinical Lead for Paediatric Surgery in Glasgow.

Having trained in several National Paediatric Surgical Centres and also a year overseas in Australia, Atul has accumulated a vast wealth of experience in dealing with a wide variety of Children’s Surgical problems.

Atul carries out all aspects of the General Surgery of Childhood including hernias (inguinal, umbilical, epigastric etc), circumcisions, undescended testes, ingrowing toenails and removal of skin lesions. Hernia surgery can be carried out laparoscopically (keyhole).

Atul is a Tutor for the Basic Surgical Skills Course at the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow, Faculty member for the British Association of Paediatric Endoscopic Surgeons Advanced 3mm course and Faculty Member of the International Paediatric Endosurgery Group. He is also an Examiner for the Intercollegiate MRCS examination and Educational Supervisor for Paediatric Surgical Trainees. He has written several surgical book chapters and published many articles in peer reviewed journals.

Atul began formal training in Paediatric Surgery at Yorkhill Hospital and was appointed to his current post in 2004. During the training period he also completed a 2 year (1996-98) research thesis on Neonatal Pulmonary Hypertension while working as ECMO fellow at Yorkhill and at Glasgow University after securing a grant from the Chief Scientists Office. As part of his clinical training Atul worked at the Royal Hospital for Sick Kids in Edinburgh (1999-2001) and completed his training with a 1 year overseas appointment in Brisbane, Australia (2003). Initially appointed as Lead for the development of laparoscopic surgery, Atul’s main areas of interest are Laparoscopic & Thoracoscopic surgery, Neonatal surgery and all forms of General Paediatric Surgery. Atul’s main areas of interest are Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Laparoscopic & Thoracoscopic Surgery, Neonatal Surgery and all forms of General Paediatric Surgery.
