He is the Lead Surgeon for both gallbladder disease, with particular interest in urgent gallbladder surgery with cholangiography and management of CBD stones, and for IBD (Crohn’s disease, colitis).
His specialist interests are colitis, Crohn’s disease and colorectal cancer with a keen interest in IBD, gallbladder disease and endoscopy. He is experienced in simple and complex anal fistulae and prolapse surgery, as well as the treatment of piles.
Mr Rate performs laparoscopic cholecystectomy, cholangiography and treatment of bile duct stones with biliary stenting, as well as open hernia surgery. He has performed in excess of 200 gallbladder operations per annum, with less than 0.5% conversion to open surgery and performs over 800 diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy per year.
Mr Rate is also a member of IBD and ERCP multi-disciplinary teams and teaches regional registrars and core trainees.
