About Dr Anirban Mitra
Personal Profile
Dr Anirban Maitra is currently employed as a Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine (Paediatric Pulmonologist) at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (Central Manchester University Hospitals), the largest single site tertiary children’s hospital in UK. He is the director of Cystic Fibrosis unit (currently the largest in the country) and is the lead for bronchiectasis and primary ciliary dyskinesia. Graduated from Calcutta Medical College, India, Asia’s second oldest medical school practicing European Medicine, he has been in UK since 1997. He has been involved in the tertiary management of children with complicated respiratory problems for the past 13 years. He worked as a Research Fellow at the Bristol Children’s Hospital and had published widely in highly rated academic journals (BMJ, Thorax, Clinical and Experimental Allergy). He completed the much-coveted National Grid Training in Paediatric Respiratory medicine from the Sheffield Children’s hospital in 2009 and has been practicing as a Consultant since. He has worked as a Consultant in University Children’s Hospital at Leicester, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital (Liverpool) and had spent working in tertiary institutions overseas before joining Manchester Children’s Hospital in 2015.
Respiratory problems in children are widely prevalent making it the most important reason for parents consulting a medical professional and Dr Maitra feels that the respiratory needs of children are often unmet. Detailed but focussed history, lung function testing, baseline allergy and immune investigations and appropriate imaging (Chest X Ray, High Resolution CT scan) are some of the methods that Dr Maitra judiciously employs to evaluate his patients to reach a diagnosis.
In addition to his clinical commitments, he is heavily involved in research and the teaching of undergraduate students, post graduate students and junior doctors. He is the Associate Hospital Dean for Student Experience for Manchester Medical School. He has been a regular speaker in many national and international conferences. He is associated with a number of organisations including the Cystic Fibrosis Trust (UK) and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (US).
Dr Maitra lives in Worsley, Salford and is happily married to Chandrani, an Information Scientist. The couple have a lovely daughter currently studying at a London University. Both Dr Maitra and his wife are committed towards increasing awareness of respiratory ailments in the underprivileged areas of the world as their only daughter suffers from asthma and allergies
