Mr Andrew Sankey is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder and elbow conditions. With nearly 15 years of experience as a consultant trauma surgeon, he has extensive expertise in treating a wide range of upper limb injuries and conditions, including tendon and ligament tears, fractures, and joint instability.
He provides specialist care for both acute injuries and long-term conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow. His expertise includes the treatment of shoulder and humerus fractures, elbow and forearm injuries, and sports-related conditions. He also treats more complex and chronic problems, including shoulder arthritis requiring total shoulder replacement surgery, rotator cuff tears, recurrent shoulder dislocations, shoulder instability, impingement, and acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) problems.
Where appropriate, Mr Sankey uses minimally invasive arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery techniques to help patients achieve effective treatment and recovery. His approach focuses on understanding each patient’s individual needs, helping them return to everyday activities, work, and sport.
Mr Sankey has held a number of leadership and advisory positions within both the NHS and private healthcare sectors. He has served as Service Director and Clinical Director of the Orthopaedic Department at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Hospitals Trust, where he played a key role in supporting the department, including through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. He is also a member of the Medical Advisory Committee at King Edward VII’s Hospital and represents Shoulder and Elbow Consultants within the wider HCA private hospital group.
Alongside his clinical work, Mr Sankey has a strong interest in research and education. His research includes improvements in proximal humerus fracture fixation, techniques used in total shoulder replacement surgery, and bone biology relating to implant integration. He has published research papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented his work at national and international conferences.
Mr Sankey studied medicine at St John’s College, University of Cambridge, where he also achieved an MA in Biological Anthropology. He completed further medical training at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College London, qualifying as a doctor in 1997. He later undertook specialist Trauma and Orthopaedic training through the North East Thames programme, based at University College London Hospital, followed by advanced Upper Limb Surgery fellowships at St Mary’s Hospital and UCLH.
He became a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at Chelsea and Westminster NHS Hospitals Trust in 2009 and continues to contribute to surgical education, regularly teaching at professional courses, surgical training programmes, and supervising trainee surgeons.
Outside of medicine, Mr Sankey enjoys keeping active through road cycling, running, skiing, and golf. His personal interest in sport gives him a valuable understanding of the injuries and challenges faced by active patients, helping him build strong doctor-patient relationships focused on achieving the best possible outcomes.
