He carried out his basic surgical training in Edinburgh before moving to the prestigious Oswestry rotation for his higher surgical training.
Following this, Andrew was the National Spine Fellow in Leeds in 2011. During this time, he was lucky enough to be trained by both leading spinal Neurosurgeons and Orthopaedic surgeons. He was also involved in teaching and developing spinal surgery in developing countries.
Andrew is now a consultant in his hometown, Aberdeen where he has been working as a consultant since 2012.
His elective practice has been exclusively spine surgery since starting as a consultant in 2012. He has therefore developed a wealth of experience and is very knowledgeable about all aspects of back and neck problems. He has also performed thousands of spinal operations and is a very skilled and caring surgeon.
Andrew is part of the spine and trauma on call rota at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. This covers a very large geographical area, the whole of Northern Scotland. He often performs emergency lifesaving spine surgery for patients who have been involved in high energy trauma such as car crashes. He regularly performs complex spine operations and treats patients with spinal cord compression caused by cancer and infections.
Andrew is also an honorary clinical lecturer at Aberdeen University. He is actively involved in research and has published many papers on spine surgery. He is also keenly involved in the training of surgeons and medical students. He was recently voted trainer of the year for Scottish orthopaedic trainers.
He has attended many national and international conferences and keeps up to date with the most recent advances in spinal surgery.
