He trained in surgical oncology and then additionally, plastic and reconstructive breast surgery, and was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgical Oncology at The Christie Hospital, Manchester. He was then appointed to St Bartholomew’s Hospital as the Professor of Breast and Oncoplastic Surgery, Queen Mary University of London. After 36 years in the NHS, he now works in the independent sector.
As he holds a keen interest in patients with genetic breast cancer and oncoplastic breast surgery, Professor Baildam has over 200 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and chapters, and has innovated a number of approaches to breast cancer surgery. He is past President of The Associate of Cancer Surgery and the Chair of The Royal College of Surgeons of England Cancer Surgery Committee. He pioneered the cross-specialty breast surgery oncoplastic training fellowships in the UK.
