Mr Tamhankar works as a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon at the Northern General Hospital, where he performs complex major oesophago-gastric cancer surgery. His private practice and NHS Choose and Book work is based at Thornbury Hospital.

Mr Tamhankar has a wide ranging experience from his training in 3 different continents. Having completed his medical degree and basic surgical training in Mumbai, India, he acquired higher training in his specialty in Sheffield. Besides this, Mr Tamhankar spent 2 years as a Foregut Fellow with Professor Tom DeMeester at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, working on reflux disease and Barrett’s oesophagus.

He was also a visiting fellow with Professor Takeshi Sano at the Cancer Institute Hospital, Tokyo, where he learnt the Japanese philosophy of radical oesophago-gastric cancer surgery. After concluding his specialist training in Sheffield, Mr Tamhankar completed a Laparoscopic Oesophagogastric Fellowship in Guildford, Surrey and was then appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at the Northern General Hospital. He is affiliated with the University of Sheffield as an Honorary Senior Lecturer.

At Thornbury Hospital, Mr Tamhankar offers assessment and investigations for abdominal pain, upper GI endoscopy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (fundoplication), hernia surgery, lumps and bumps surgery, and minor and major emergency surgery.
