He is a Consultant Physician in the NHS at Croydon University Hospital since 1996, where he looks after acutely unwell medical in-patients in hospital. He also runs a long established out-patient multi-disciplinary specialty service for patients with Parkinson's Disease and related movement disorders.
His practice includes Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), where relevant, which provides a whole patient approach to managing the physical, mental and social health of the individual. He carries out assessments and investigations for diagnosis and management of Dementia. He offers consultations for assessment of mental capacity in patients deemed to have cognitive impairment or Dementia. Elderly persons with multiple medical conditions are often several medications, which can produce adverse interactions. Dr Mehta routinely reviews patient medications to ensure that prescribing is rational and necessary.
He trained in Geriatric Medicine, Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine in Liverpool, Hammersmith Hospital and St George's Hospital in London. He was a research fellow at St Georges Hospital investigating the role of the oesophagus in causing non cardiac chest pain.
In addition to his clinical practice, he has a keen interest in postgraduate medical training. He was a Deputy Postgraduate Dean responsible for overseeing the training of doctor in hospitals in South London. He is a Governor on the Court of John Whitgift Foundation in Croydon and chairs the Care Committee of Whitgift Care, which provides residential care, nursing care and sheltered housing.
Dr Mehta has been an invited speaker at several GP educational events in hospitals, at local GP surgeries and patient participation groups covering a range of topics relating to ageing including Parkinson’s Disease, Dementia, Managing Frailty, Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment and Polypharmacy. He practices at Shirley Oaks Hospital since 1997 and is available for inpatient medical admissions (emergency and planned), outpatient consultations, which can be carried out in person or remotely by telephone or by video.
