About Professor Amjad Shad

Personal Profile

Personal Profile
Professor Amjad Shad is a highly experienced Consultant Neurosurgeon providing private care at The Meriden Hospital in Coventry and Three Shires Hospital in Northampton. He also holds a long‑standing NHS consultant post at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, where he has worked since 2004.
In 2012, Professor Shad founded the Coventry Brain and Spine Service, established to provide modern, evidence‑based care for patients suffering from back pain, neck pain, leg pain and complex spinal or brain conditions. His practice focuses on delivering safe, effective treatments that aim to relieve pain, restore movement and improve quality of life.

Professor Shad completed his advanced neurosurgical training in Edinburgh, Oxford and the United States, gaining extensive experience in both routine and complex spinal disorders. His international training has shaped his approach to care, combining surgical precision with the latest minimally invasive techniques wherever appropriate.

Clinical Expertise
Professor Shad specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions and brain tumours, with particular expertise in cervical and lumbar spine problems. He is known for adopting innovative surgical approaches that reduce tissue damage, shorten recovery times and help patients return to normal activities sooner.
Where clinically appropriate, Professor Shad favours disc replacement surgery over traditional disc fusion. Disc replacement preserves natural movement in the spine and may reduce strain on surrounding spinal levels, offering long‑term benefits for suitable patients.

Conditions Treated
Professor Shad treats a wide range of neurological and spinal conditions, including:

Back and neck pain
Slipped or herniated discs
Degenerative disc disease
Spinal nerve compression
Cervical and lumbar spine disorders
Pituitary disorders
Skull base tumours
Brain tumours, including meningiomas
Complex spinal conditions

Treatments & Procedures
Professor Shad offers a comprehensive range of treatments, including:

Intervertebral disc herniation surgery
Intervertebral disc replacement surgery
Cervical disc surgery
Lumbar microdiscectomy
Lumbar laminectomy
Lumbar spinal decompression
Minimally invasive spine surgery
Complex spinal reconstruction
Endoscopic neurosurgery
Pituitary tumour surgery
Skull base tumour surgery
Pain‑relieving spinal procedures

Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual, with careful consideration given to non‑surgical options before surgery is recommended.

Experience & Innovation
Throughout his career, Professor Shad has embraced innovation in neurosurgery. Through his research, he developed a new technique for treating cervical disc problems, avoiding the need for painful hip bone grafts and improving post‑operative recovery for many patients.
He has been involved in several ground‑breaking procedures, including the minimally invasive removal of a large brain tumour via the nasal passage and pin‑hole surgery for spinal cysts causing long‑term pain. These achievements reflect his commitment to advancing patient care while minimising surgical risk.

Patient‑Centred Approach
Professor Shad is known for his calm, reassuring manner and clear communication. He takes time to explain diagnoses and treatment options in plain language, helping patients feel informed and confident in their care.
Patients benefit from fast access to private consultations, thorough assessments and continuity of care from diagnosis through recovery.

Patient Testimonials
"Professor Shad explained everything clearly and gave me confidence from the very first appointment. My back pain has improved dramatically, and I felt supported throughout."
"Exceptional care from start to finish. The minimally invasive surgery meant I recovered far quicker than expected."
