Personal profile

Mr Alun Yewlett is an experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon working at the The Lincoln Hospital. His NHS base is Grantham and District Hospital where he is the Upper Limb Lead.

He specialises in shoulder and elbow surgery and is a high volume arthroplasty surgeon. He graduated with a first class honours degree from Imperial College London in 2004 and completed his Higher Surgical Training on the Welsh rotation. In addition to his surgical qualifications, he obtained a higher degree in Trauma Surgery for which he won the award for outstanding performance and his dissertation was on complex elbow fractures.

He underwent further specialist training in shoulder and elbow surgery both nationally and internationally, working with Dr Roger van Riet and Dr Eygendaal, two of the world’s foremost elbow arthroscopists in Belgium and Holland. He was privileged to train under both Mr Ro Kulkarni (ex BESS president in Newport) for two years of his registrar training and also Mr Tim Matthews in Cardiff, who sparked his enthusiasm for elbow surgery.

Following his CCT, he completed several prestigious competitively-appointed fellowships. The first was in Exeter working under Mr Chris Smith and the second was in Stockport under Mr Matt Ravenscroft, as his first Senior Shoulder Fellow. The third was in London under Mr Vipul Patel as the BOA Transitional Leadership Fellow.

He was awarded the national BESS Leadership fellowship award in 2015 and also co-authored the national BESS / BOA guidelines on ACJ pathology. He offers a “one stop” ultrasound shoulder service. He believes in good quality research to underpin clinical decision making and collects PROMS data for all of his patients, regularly auditing his outcomes and performance against national standards. He uses published evidence to inform his decision making process and will only suggest a surgical solution for a problem when there is no better non-surgical alternative.
