About Professor Alok Tiwari

Personal Profile

Professor Alok Tiwari qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, London in 1996. He then undertook basic surgical training at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Essex.

Professor Tiwari undertook a Master of Surgery degree at the Royal Free Hospital in London. His thesis was the ‘Development of a hybrid cardiovascular graft using a tissue engineering approach. He presented and published extensively from this.

Professor Tiwari received specialist registrar training in London and Essex in both general and vascular surgery. During this time, he undertook a one-year Vascular fellowship at the prestigious Westmead Vascular Unit in Sydney, Australia where he learnt endovascular techniques to allow the treatment of patients using minimally invasive methods including angioplasty and Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR). He has worked in Singapore for 12 months where learnt to further deal with complex diabetic foot disease and advanced endovascular angioplasty for limb salvage (to avoid leg amputations).

Professor Tiwari was appointed to University Hospital Birmingham in 2011. He is a visiting Professor of Vascular Surgery at Birmingham City University and an Honorary Associate  Professor at the University of Birmingham involved in teaching and training medical students as well as specialist trainees. He was instrumental in the development of the diabetic foot service. He has over 110 published articles in journals in many aspects of vascular surgery. He is the current training program director in vascular surgery in the West Midlands.

Professor Tiwari specialises in the minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins with his preferred treatment being endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) and foam sclerotherapy. He regularly teaches other doctors about this technique. He also manages patients with claudication (leg pain on walking), leg ulcers, abdominal aortic aneurysm, patient requiring carotid surgery for strokes and has a special interest in the management of the diabetic foot. He can offer both keyhole and open operations and tailors the treatment to suit the patients.
