Mr Alistair Macey is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon at Ross Hall Hospital, Glasgow, and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow. He specialises in surgery of the foot and ankle, trauma and limb reconstruction.

Having initially studied Microbiology at Trinity College Dublin receiving an Honours degree, Mr Macey undertook medical school at the University of Glasgow. Foundation training in the West of Scotland was followed by a successful application to run through Orthopaedic training in which he ranked first in the country. 8 Years of speciality training was completed across the West of Scotland with Fellowships in Limb Reconstruction including Foot and Ankle Surgery and Lower Limb Arthroplasty undertaken at QEUH Glasgow and King’s College Hospital London. 

Mr Macey regularly treats elective foot and ankle problems including minimally invasive hallux valgus and forefoot surgery, midfoot fusion, ankle and subtalar joint preservation and fusion. He performs soft tissue reconstruction such as Achilles tendon repairs using minimally invasive techniques, delayed Achilles tendon reconstruction and tendon transfers and ankle ligament reconstruction with Internal Brace. He performs arthroscopic surgery for conditions such as osteochondral defects and loose bodies. In addition, he has a busy NHS practice in complex limb reconstruction dealing in infection, bone loss, amputation, deformity correction, treatment of non-union, bone transport and limb lengthening using both internal and external fixation techniques. To broaden his horizons, Mr Macey was awarded a British Limb Reconstruction Society travel bursary to visit osseointegration and limb reconstruction centres in Sydney, Australia and Christchurch, New Zealand.

He has undertaken medico-legal training with Bond Solon and the Expert Witness Institute and is a member of The British Limb Reconstruction Society, The British Foot and Ankle Society, The British Orthopaedic Association and is a Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow. 

Mr Macey enjoys teaching and is a faculty member on the internationally renowned Hull Deformity Course and the Smith and Nephew Surgical Approaches for Internal Fixation Instructional Course. Research is something he has actively engaged with since his time working in the Staphylococcal Research Group in Columbia University, New York. He has published and presented work internationally and was a Keynote Speaker at the Royal Australian College of Surgeons Annual Scientific Conference 2026.

In his free time, he is an avid cyclist, commuting to work on two wheels and taking his young son on offroad cycles. Motorised two wheeled vehicles are also something of a passion and he enjoys working on an ageing motorbike for when the legs are tired. Surfing, windsurfing and mountaineering take up any remaining time and blow the cobwebs away and keep him fresh for work.
