About Professor Ali Jawad

Personal Profile

Professor Ali Jawad dedicated over 42 years to the National Health Service (NHS), with 27 of those years spent at Barts Health NHS Trust. Originally from Baghdad, Iraq, he studied medicine in his home city before relocating to the UK in 1978. Over the decades, Professor Jawad built an exceptional career in rheumatology, education, and global medical engagement.

He was appointed Consultant Rheumatologist at The Royal London Hospital in 1997, where he remained until retiring in 2025. Known for his deep clinical expertise and compassionate care, Professor Jawad routinely managed over five specialist clinics each week. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned from retirement in 2020 to provide crucial frontline support.

Alongside his clinical work, Professor Jawad held an academic role as Professor of Rheumatology at the William Harvey Research Institute, Queen Mary University of London. His research interests include metabolic bone diseases and the role of cytokines in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. He has published extensively, including three books, numerous book chapters, and over 200 peer-reviewed articles. He has also secured multiple research grants to advance treatment and understanding in the field.

Professor Jawad is deeply committed to medical education and training — both in the UK and globally. He held several prominent roles including:

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Professor Jawad was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2022 New Year’s Honours.
