About Mr Ali Haque

Personal Profile

Mr Haque is a Consultant Surgeon specialising in Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) and General Surgery, with extensive expertise in advanced laparoscopic (“keyhole”) techniques. He is the Upper GI Surgeon at Frimley Park Hospital, where he is dedicated to developing services, raising standards, and delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.

After completing his MBBS degree, Mr Haque achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). He went on to undertake advanced postgraduate training, including a prestigious Upper GI fellowship at the tertiary centre in Guildford, where he gained expertise in complex hernias, reflux disease, and advanced laparoscopic procedures. He further refined his skills during a specialist fellowship at the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) unit at King’s College London, working with highly specialised teams in the management of complex gallbladder, liver, and pancreatic conditions. These fellowships provided invaluable experience in high-risk cases and in both open and minimally invasive techniques, which now form the foundation of his clinical practice.

Mr Haque’s core expertise lies in the management of abdominal wall hernias, including inguinal, umbilical, and incisional hernias. He has a particular interest in recurrent and complex cases requiring abdominal wall reconstruction. His approach is tailored to the individual patient, whether that involves laparoscopic repair, open surgery, or conservative management. He places strong emphasis on thorough discussion of risks, benefits, and expectations, ensuring collaborative and personalised decision-making.

In addition, Mr Haque specialises in gallbladder and biliary surgery. He has significant experience in managing acute and complex gallbladder conditions, including the “hot gallbladder” service for acute cholecystitis, as well as bile duct exploration. His expertise extends to elective laparoscopic gallstone surgery, enabling him to provide safe and effective treatment in both emergency and planned settings. He is also highly experienced in hiatal hernia repairs and anti-reflux surgery, offering long-term relief for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) through minimally invasive techniques that promote faster recovery.

As a JAG-certified endoscopist, Mr Haque performs diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy. He manages a wide spectrum of conditions, including ulcers, polyps, swallowing difficulties, reflux, early cancers, and altered bowel habits, and provides surveillance endoscopies where necessary. This dual expertise in surgery and endoscopy allows him to deliver comprehensive care from investigation through to treatment.

Multidisciplinary collaboration is central to his practice. He works closely with gastroenterologists, oncologists, radiologists, and anaesthetists, ensuring patients benefit from the combined expertise of a wider team. This is particularly important in complex cases and helps optimise outcomes. His evidence-based approach, combined with a strong focus on minimally invasive techniques, has consistently achieved high success rates, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times for patients.

Beyond his clinical work, Mr Haque is passionate about surgical education and training. He mentors both junior and senior trainees and maintains close links with the Surgical Royal Colleges and the Higher Education Academy, where he is a Fellow. His commitment to training reflects his broader dedication to advancing standards in surgery.

Equally, he values patient education, taking time to ensure patients are fully informed and engaged in decisions about their care. This fosters trust and empowers individuals to make confident choices about their treatment.

Outside of medicine, Mr Haque enjoys cycling and hiking. He remains committed to continuous professional development, staying at the forefront of surgical innovation and new technologies to ensure his patients benefit from the highest standards of modern surgical care.
