About Prof Alan Johnstone

Personal Profile

Alan graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1986. He completed his registrar and senior registrar training in both Edinburgh and Aberdeen, which also included a full-time period of laboratory research.

In 1997, he became a Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen and an Honorary Consultant Surgeon. During this time, he also completed a prestigious clinical and research fellowship in North America, proudly representing UK Orthopaedics.

By 2002, Alan was appointed Professor at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. He continues to work as a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon with NHS Grampian.

Alan played a key role in bringing arthroscopic shoulder and elbow surgery to Aberdeen. He has also been instrumental in modernising the city’s Trauma Service. His clinical focus is on complex trauma, and he is actively involved in research at local, national, and international levels. He also mentors Research Fellows pursuing full-time research.

Until recently, Alan served as a visiting Professor at the University of Perugia in Italy.

He advises several multinational orthopaedic companies and is the Clinical Director of Softcell Medical Ltd—a local company developing an innovative diagnostic medical device with wide-ranging clinical applications.

For the past 15 years, Alan has been the senior clinical advisor to Scottish Health Innovations Limited, the innovation arm of NHS Scotland. In recognition of his contributions, he was named Scottish Life Sciences Innovator of the Year in 2012.
