About Mr Adam Sykes

Personal Profile

Adam Sykes is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, specialising exclusively in disorders of the foot and ankle. Since qualifying from Imperial College London in 2007, he has dedicated nearly two decades to the pursuit of surgical excellence. Today, he brings that wealth of experience to his private practice, offering patients a combination of high-level academic training and cutting-edge surgical innovation.

His practice is defined by a commitment to functional restoration tailored to the patient’s needs. Whether treating a high-performance athlete with an acute tendon rupture or a patient seeking relief from chronic arthritic pain, Adam uses a carefully considered approach to ensure the best possible long-term outcomes.

Pioneering Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS)

Adam is at the forefront of modern orthopaedic techniques. He is proud to have introduced Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) for foot and ankle pathologies to the Royal Berkshire Hospital. By utilising specialised "keyhole" instruments and advanced radiological guidance, he is able to perform complex corrections—such as bunion surgery and lesser toe alignments—through tiny incisions. For the patient, this transition toward MIS often means significantly less soft-tissue damage, reduced post-operative swelling, and a faster return to footwear and daily activities compared to traditional open surgery.

Elite Training and Fellowship Background

Adam’s clinical foundation was laid at Imperial College London, followed by his selection for the highly competitive Thames Valley (Oxford) Deanery specialist training programme. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS Tr&Orth) in 2018 and achieved his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in 2020.

To achieve true sub-specialist mastery, he completed two of the UK’s most prestigious and rigorous fellowships:

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham: A centre of excellence where he focussed on elective reconstruction and complex joint preservation.

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), Stanmore: The UK’s premier orthopaedic tertiary centre, where he gained extensive experience in treating complex deformities and revision surgeries that had failed elsewhere.

Leadership in Surgical Education

A firm believer that "to teach is to learn twice," Adam is deeply committed to training the future generations of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He serves as an educational and clinical supervisor within the Oxford region, mentoring registrars and senior fellows. His role in medical education ensures he remains at the peak of surgical theory; by teaching the latest techniques to the surgeons of tomorrow, he ensures his own practice remains aligned with the most current international standards and peer-reviewed research.

Beyond the Operating Theatre

Outside of his clinical and teaching commitments, Adam is a devoted husband and father. A former rugby player of many years, he now stays involved in the sport by coaching his son’s rugby team, a role that keeps him active within the local community and reinforces his understanding of the physical demands placed on athletes.

He is an enthusiast of the outdoors and can often be found mountain biking, hiking, or kayaking, pursuits that give him a first-hand appreciation for the importance of mobility and joint health. For relaxation, he enjoys the strategic challenges of gaming, spanning both modern computer titles and traditional tabletop games. This blend of high-energy sports and analytical hobbies mirrors his professional approach: a balance of physical precision and thoughtful, strategic planning.

Adam manages the full spectrum of foot and ankle conditions, with a focus on:
