About Abhishek Reekhaye

Personal Profile

Mr Abhishek Reekhaye is a Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon specialising in kidney and upper urinary tract cancer, with a particular focus on advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery. He is currently a substantive Consultant at the Frimley Renal Cancer Centre, one of the highest-volume kidney cancer centres in the UK, recognised for excellent outcomes and among the shortest lengths of stay for robotic kidney surgery nationally.

He graduated from Newcastle University and completed his higher surgical training in London, where he was ranked second nationally at ST3 selection. He was awarded an MCh in Minimally Invasive Surgery (Urology) with distinction, reflecting a strong academic and technical foundation in laparoscopic and robotic techniques.

Following completion of his specialist training, he undertook two highly competitive post-CCT fellowships in renal cancer surgery. The first was at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, a major trauma centre with exposure to complex surgical cases, followed by a further advanced fellowship at Frimley Renal Cancer Centre, where he developed high-volume expertise in robotic renal surgery, including the retroperitoneal approach.

He subsequently worked for 16 months as a locum Consultant at the Royal Free Hospital Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer, one of the highest-volume kidney cancer centres in Europe, managing complex renal tumours and further refining his robotic surgical practice. During this time, he performed the first day-case retroperitoneal robotic partial nephrectomy at the centre. In his first year as a consultant, he performed over 120 robotic renal cancer procedures, placing him among the higher-volume robotic kidney surgeons in the UK.

Alongside his clinical work, he is actively involved in research and clinical trials, including recruitment into National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) kidney cancer studies such as VISP and PaRTial. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and has received several national awards, including first prize at the South Thames Regional Urology Meeting and the Advances in Genitourinary Robotic Reconstruction Scholarship. He is committed to delivering personalised, high-quality care, combining surgical expertise with clear communication and a patient-centred approach.

Clinical Interests

Mr Reekhaye’s clinical practice is centred on robotic kidney and upper tract oncology, including partial and radical nephrectomy as well as robotic nephroureterectomy for upper tract urothelial cancer. He has particular expertise in the retroperitoneal approach to kidney surgery, which is especially beneficial for patients with previous abdominal surgery or a “hostile abdomen,” as it avoids the abdominal cavity and allows faster recovery with less impact on bowel function. He also has a strong focus on enhanced recovery pathways, offering day-case or short-stay robotic surgery for appropriately selected patients.

He has a strong interest in upper tract reconstruction, including robotic pyeloplasty and management of ureteric strictures. He works closely with a specialist reconstructive urology colleague to offer advanced techniques such as buccal mucosal graft ureteroplasty. His reconstructive experience has been further enhanced through international exposure, including a visit to Northwestern University, where he was the first international recipient of a prestigious robotic reconstruction scholarship.
