About Dr Abhishek Kumar

Personal Profile

Dr. Kumar is a highly experienced consultant cardiologist with over 15 years of expertise in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Based at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, he is clinical director of cardiology and cardiac cath lab services and divisional lead for clinical Research.

As part of Greater Manchester Primary PCI service, he performs primary angioplasty at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Dr Kumar studied medicine at University of Delhi. Having trained in cardiology at some of the UK’s leading centres, including the Lancashire Cardiac Centre (Blackpool), Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital, and Dorset Heart Centre (Bournemouth), Dr. Kumar provides specialist care across a wide range of cardiac conditions.

His expertise includes the medical management of angina, heart failure, arrhythmias (heart rhythm disorders), high blood pressure (hypertension), raised cholesterol (hypercholesterolaemia), cardiovascular screening and prevention. Dr Kumar has specific expertise in simple and complex coronary angioplasty, including the treatment of chronic total occlusions (CTOs), using the latest interventional cardiology techniques and devices. He has successfully established and led on CTO angioplasty programme at Wigan.

As an international expert in the field of interventional cardiology he has been invited as guest speaker and chairperson at prestigious cardiology conferences and serves as an international proctor for complex angioplasty, training interventional cardiologists worldwide. Alongside his clinical work, Dr Kumar is an active researcher and educator. He has led several national and international clinical trials as the principal investigator. His research interest lies in studying the safety & efficacy of innovative devices & technologies for treatment of coronary artery disease.

Dr Kumar is an honorary senior lecturer at Edge Hill University, an educational supervisor for cardiology trainees, and has served on the council of the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society (BCIS). In his role as a clinical leader, he has led and collaborated on transformative projects to enhance patient safety and efficiency and make the services more patient-centric and compassionate. Above all, Dr Kumar is committed to providing high quality care to his patients. He treats every patient with respect, dignity, compassion, and candour whilst supporting them to make informed decisions about their health, with their best interests always at the heart of his practice.
