Mr Abdallah Sharqawi is a Consultant Urological Surgeon specialising in Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) and complex urethral reconstruction. Since helping establish the HoLEP service at Bolton in 2021, he now receives referrals from across the entire North West, managing some of the region’s largest and most challenging prostates. He also provides advanced HoLEP training for senior urology trainees, many of whom competitively apply for this high-volume attachment.
In addition to HoLEP, Mr Sharqawi offers a range of minimally invasive treatments for benign prostate enlargement including Rezume, Urolift among other option. Ensuring patients have access to modern, personalised options suited to their symptoms and prostate anatomy.
He also established Bolton’s comprehensive urethral reconstruction service and he is among a very small number of surgeons in the UK capable of performing the full spectrum of urethroplasty techniques, and one of few surgeons in the North West and nationally offering comprehensive reconstructive options. He treats urethral stricture disease using approaches from minimally invasive endoscopic procedures like Optilume to complex open reconstruction, including oral mucosal grafts.
Alongside his subspecialist work, he undertakes the complete spectrum of core urology procedures, including comprehensive diagnostic services, all types of stone management, and the full breadth of bladder and prostate cancer care. He is consistently recognised by patients and colleagues for his compassionate, patient-centred approach and his commitment to going the extra mile to ensure high-quality care.
Training and Leadership
Mr Sharqawi completed extensive higher surgical training across major tertiary centres in the UK and Egypt, including an Andrology Research Fellowship at University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and senior roles at Suez Canal University Hospitals. His training spans reconstructive surgery, uro-oncology, stone disease, paediatric urology, and andrology.
He is the Urology Cancer Lead at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, where he has modernised and streamlined several major cancer pathways—particularly prostate and testicular cancer—ensuring rapid diagnostics, efficient patient flow, and excellent clinical outcomes. Under his leadership, Bolton’s cancer performance has ranked among the top three urology cancer pathways in the UK.
Academic and Education Profile
Academically, Mr Sharqawi holds a Master’s degree (2016) focused on advanced urethral reconstruction techniques and a PhD degree (2023) examining the role of stem cells in erectile dysfunction and tunica albuginea healing. He is heavily involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, serving as a clinical and educational supervisor and contributing to the development and delivery of teaching and training curricula. He regularly teaches medical students and participates in regional and departmental education programmes.
