About Dr Abbi Lulsegged

Personal Profile

Dr Abbi Lulsegged is a Consultant in General Medicine, Endocrinology and Diabetes. He qualified from Guys and St Thomas Medical Schools in London and went on to study Diabetes and Endocrinology in the Royal Free, University College London and St Thomas Hospital.

Before leaving the NHS, he worked as a Consultant Physician at Kings College Hospital for over 10 years during which time he developed the Endocrine service at Bromley and worked closely with allied professionals to make into a busy, thriving practice. He led on the production of guidelines on the management of vitamin D deficiency which then served a population of over 1 million people. He left the NHS in 2017 after over 20 years’ service. He was awarded several clinical excellence points and made a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in recognition of his NHS work. He has continued to provide input to the NHS including delivering a diabetes remission programme to a consortium of GP surgeries and educational programs to GPs.

He enjoys all manner of general Endocrinology and has significant experience in working up cases from scratch and arranging onward referral for additional treatment if necessary.

He also has a special interest in men’s and women’s health, unexplained medical conditions, obesity, fatigue and reversing or promoting remission of type 2 diabetes in amenable cases and conditions such as long covid and mast cell activation syndrome. He belongs to several associations in support of his interest including Endocrine Society, British Endocrine Society, European Endocrine Society, British Thyroid Association, British Association of Clinical Diabetologists, and Royal College of Physicians and the Institute of Functional Medicine.

Dr Lulsegged has an interest in Functional Medicine, having studied with the prestigious Institute of Functional Medicine in America.  Combining functional medicine with conventional medicine has helped him to practice much more holistically, recognising the connection with problems such as stress, sleep and gut issues, chronic infections with underlying medical conditions. He enjoys problem solving; a helpful asset when treating individuals with complex problems and has developed a skill for assimilating a lot of information and formulating a plan of action. He is also very much at home dealing with more straightforward Endocrine issues.

What is Endocrinology and Functional Medicine?

Endocrinology is the branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the glands that secrete hormones, a chemical messenger.  “Functional medicine is a systems biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease.” Because hormones affect many different organs and systems, Endocrinologists usually need to have a greater breadth of knowledge and this complements very nicely, the principals of Functional Medicine. Also, the “detective style” approach needed to address Endocrine issues is also a key requirement when practicing functional medicine.

He has lectured widely and to diverse groups, both nationally and internationally. He has previously been an advanced life support instructor, lecturer at postgraduate courses, and regular contributor to undergraduate and postgraduate training both in the hospital he worked in and nationally. He was selected to write examination questions for the Royal College of Physicians. He was also asked to talk at an All-Parliamentary Group on Diabetes in the Houses of Parliament on the subject of reversing type 2 diabetes. He was invited to appear on a BBC Television program on the subject of preventing diabetes which received one of the highest viewer ratings.

Dr Lulsegged sees patients in Kent and Central London.
