Dealing with post-stroke issues

A stroke happens when a part of the brain is damaged either by lack of blood supply (ischaemic stroke) or bleeding (haemorrhagic stroke).

Some people recover quickly from a stroke, but around two-thirds will have a degree of disability and impairment.

If your family member or loved one has had a stroke, they may have experienced changes in their:

  • emotional state
  • perception
  • speech
  • swallowing
  • motor and sensory functions
  • vision
  • bladder and bowel control
  • cognitive ability (mental processing)

While some effects might be permanent, there is often potential for improvement, especially if they gain early and ongoing rehabilitation.

Medicine has come a long way in providing physical and cognitive support for stroke sufferers. The brain is remarkably resilient and so are people.

At our rehabilitation centre, or highly skilled team of experts will work with your loved one to improve normal function, build confidence and optimise their potential.

The road to recovery - Paul’s journey

Paul is an infectious, free-spirited 64-year-old man from Walsall in the West Midlands.

Paul suffered a stroke whilst having surgery for high blood pressure. He awoke to find that he had lost movement in his left arm and leg.

After going home, he was reliant on his friend Jan, who like many loved ones of stroke patients, helped him with everyday tasks, assisted him to the toilet and helped him after a serious fall.

Paul felt frustrated and daunted by his situation. Recognising this and feeling equally concerned, Jan contacted our team to ask for help.

When Paul arrived at Circle Rehabilitation, his mobility was reduced and he had lost most of his independence. But we were able to assure both him and Jan that we could help.

Paul's story

Then:
"My left leg didn't feel like it belonged to me. It was like dragging a piece of wood. I couldn't do anything. I couldn't walk or stay balanced.”

Now:
"Now, I can do the things that the nurses did for me, by myself. I feel confident and I'm improving every day. My entire team at Circle Rehab are out of this world."

Paul Edge, former stroke patient

After two weeks of intense Physiotherapy and Occupational Health sessions, Paul was discharged from Circle Rehabilitation and walked his way to the ambulance.

"Two weeks at Circle Rehabilitation has made my leg feel like it belongs to me again!"

Paul continued to receive follow up appointments at Circle Rehabilitation over the following months, to continue his improvements.

  • Treatment and support for stroke patients

If a loved one has recently had a stroke and has suffered an impairment, our personalised rehab service is focused on helping them to adjust, adapt and regain a level of independence. Through our advanced equipment and technology and individual time with physiotherapists and expert support staff, we aim to give stroke patients back their independence as fully and as quickly as possible.

We offer access to a range of experts in each aspect of stroke recovery from speech therapy to cognitive therapy. We will watch over each patient through every step of their recovery, making sure that they not only get the help that they need, but that they are looked after, well-fed, and emotionally supported, along their journey.

  • Paul's journey: Initial assessment

After arriving at Circle Rehabilitation, Paul was immediately assessed. Understanding the severity of his condition, our team created a support plan focusing on improving Paul's mobility and muscle strength. He immediately began intensive physiotherapy (two sessions per day).

Trey Vergara, Paul's senior rehabilitation nurse said:

"Paul's person-centered care involved respect, emotional support, physical comfort, communication, continuity, medical care and transition. We made sure that we always considered Paul's comfort and safety. We also provided continuous emotional support to Paul, his family and friends."

How can we treat stroke patients

Stroke rehabilitation is a vital part of recovery for many stroke survivors. At Circle Rehabilitation, we offer comprehensive rehabilitation services to help individuals regain independence and improve their quality of life. Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to create personalised rehabilitation plans tailored to each patient's unique needs.

Stroke recovery aims to improve the patient's ability to carry out everyday tasks and regain as much independence as possible. We help to do this safely so that the risk of another stroke is reduced.

The main benefits of rehab are physical and mental improvements:

  • Physical benefits: Being able to move and function safely
  • Mental (cognitive) benefits: Help the patient return to the highest level of functioning possible and meet individual, specific goals

There are three main ways we can help manage stroke recovery and rehabilitation:

  • A stroke is a significant medical emergency, and the patient may need to take medication for the rest of their life. Whatever medication is prescribed, we will monitor its efficacy and make any changes required to ensure that it is still providing the greatest benefit.

  • Following a stroke, patients often will need to learn new things. This may involve re-learning physical movements and 'function' (the ability to carry out everyday tasks) but they will also need to learn more about health and diet.

  • A stroke can cause physical changes, ranging from mild to severe. Walking, movement, and speech can all be affected, and they will need expert help to adapt and improve. This is where our expertise in stroke management can help, as we can provide expert care in every therapy.

  • Paul's journey: Consultant advice

Kieran (Paul's physiotherapist) was delighted to witness Paul's confidence develop over just two weeks, as he began to recognise his potential to heal in physiotherapy and beyond. He observed:

"It was palpable that Paul severely lacked confidence in his own abilities, particularly during walking, transferring or navigating stairs. Once we were able to create a safe and secure environment suitable to challenge Paul's self-doubt and prove that he could regain substantial independence, his confidence shone through."

What services do we provide?

We offer intense and personalised help with stroke recovery that goes far beyond what many rehabilitation centres can offer their patients.

  • Using mobility aids, such as a walking frame, and special walking equipment such as the Litegait, the Lyra and anti-gravity treadmill and G move.

  • By harnessing the power of modern technologies (such as robotics, sensory technology, VR and AR and gamification), our rehabilitation professionals can guide patients through the recovery process more intensively and motivationally. This results in a more optimal recovery and helps patients reach their maximum potential for functional independence and quality of life. These innovative approaches to rehabilitation hold promise for transforming the way that we deliver care. They help to empower individuals to achieve meaningful outcomes in their rehabilitation journey.

  • Using small electrical charges to stimulate muscles and help movement.

  • Specialist equipment that helps to increase balance and agility in a safe and effective way.

  • A neuropsychologist, with the aid of other medical professionals such as physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, and occupational therapists, can work with the patient to help improve cognitive function (reasoning and perception abilities).

  • Exercises for speech can significantly improve the patient's ability to speak and communicate. For formal testing, we make use of a range of assessments such as the Comprehensive Aphasia Test (CAT) and the Mount Wilga high-level language test

  • Exercises and techniques to aid swallowing aim to return swallow function to the optimum level achievable for each person.

  • Occupational therapists work with individuals to regain independence in activities of daily living (ADLs), such as dressing, grooming, and feeding. They may provide adaptive equipment, such as splints or assistive devices, to compensate for muscle weakness and facilitate participation in self-care tasks. Occupational therapy interventions also focus on energy conservation techniques and adaptive strategies to optimise functional independence and quality of life.

  • Paul's journey: Physiotherapy

Although Paul had suffered a traumatic ordeal, he felt mentally stable enough to complete our program without any of the mental health support that we offered him.

When asked about Paul's resilient attitude, his rehabilitation assistant Harriet Gosztonyi recalls:

"He was highly motivated and determined to participate in his recovery throughout the entire patient journey. He committed to all physio sessions and pushed himself hard to achieve his goals. He had intensive physio treatment, ate well, and enjoyed the food. He was almost always in good spirits."

Meet the staff

One key benefit to sending a family member or loved one to be treated at Circle Rehabilitation is its multi-disciplined and friendly staff. The staff that the patient encounters truly care about their overall experience and can help with wider issues, such as providing therapy, and nutritional help.

Every person who has suffered a stroke will be different. Here at Circle Rehabilitation, our multidisciplinary team can tailor your physical therapy programme to your individual needs and aims.

We also recognise the psychological toll of recovering from a stroke and the emotional turmoil of leaving your home to stay at a rehabilitation centre. Our staff go out of their way to make patients stay comfortable, and nurturing. They will ask what food they like, offer entertainment and a chance for variety in their day, and generally make sure that each patient is happy and cared for during their stay.

We will ensure that you are kept up to date with their recovery and wellbeing so that you can feel comfortable leaving your loved one in our hands.

  • Paul's journey: Building friendships with staff

Two weeks after being admitted by ambulance, unable to walk or stand without support, Paul walked on his own through the centre doors toward the ambulance and homeward. His team at Circle cheered him on with delight as he made his last journey through our doors.

Kieran McMahon, Senior muscular skeletal (MSK) physiotherapist said:

"Paul arrived as a patient and left as a celebrity! He was one of our first inpatients admitted to the hospital, so it was extra special to see him thrive in the rehabilitation environment we provide. The whole hospital took a vested interest in his progress too. I'm very clear that this level of support and belief really encouraged Paul to explore and push the boundaries of his functional ability."

  • Paul's journey: Friend and family reaction

Paul's friend Jan was delighted to see such a dramatic change in Paul's physical and emotional health. After all, it was her courageous decision to contact our team for help. She says:

"I've noticed a huge change in Paul. Now he gets around the house by himself and cooks his own food. He doesn't rely on other people, which I know frustrated him a lot. When I researched Circle Rehabilitation, I was extremely worried about Paul, but it seemed like the perfect place for him, and it was."
