Approximately 5% of children enter school with difficulties in speech and language*.
Many children experience speech and language difficulties, which can take various forms including producing and using sounds, understanding and using language, social interaction, attention and listening, fluency (stammering) and voice.
Treatment should be sought as early as possible. Our network of Speech and Language Therapists have skills and experience in treating the following:
- Language delay / disorders
- Dyspraxia
- Dyslexia
- Hearing impairment
- Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD)
- Physical disability
- Mild, moderate and severe learning disabilities
- Stammering

- Feeding and swallowing difficulties
A multi disciplinary approach
Our team of therapists work in close collaboration with other health care professionals to ensure patients receive the highest quality of care. Such professionals may include:
- Ear, Nose and Throat consultants
- Consultant physicians
- Dieticians
- Physiotherapists
- Occupational therapist
- Voluntary sectors / support groups
The referral process
To see a Speech and Language Therapist, generally a referral by GP or consultant is required. Self-referrals may also be accepted on occasion however permission to seek medical information from a GP/consultant will be sought from the patient.
The following medical conditions do definitely require a medical referral:
- Dysphagia referrals should be made by a Dysphagia trained nurse/professional or GP
- Dysphonia referrals require ENT examination prior to SLT assessment
