Discover how a nasal polypectomy can stop you suffering from blocked nasal passages, reduced sense of smell and taste, as well as nasal infections.
It is an operation to remove polyps in the nose. These are soft swellings of the lining that can block the nasal passages causing obstruction and a reduced sense of smell.
This operation is usually recommended to patients who are suffering from:
• Blocked nasal passages
• Reduced sense of smell
• Reduced sense of taste
• Increased nasal infections
If these symptoms do not improve with optimum medical treatment this operation may be recommended.
The procedure is usually performed under a general anaesthetic using a telescope passed through the nose to visualise the area. A small instrument called a microdebrider is then usually employed to remove the polyps.
There are some specific but uncommon risks associated with the procedure and your surgeon will discuss them in detail with you prior to the procedure.
Post operatively you should expect to feel the nose a little congested/blocked initially sometimes associated with some bloody nasal discharge. These symptoms should reduce within 2-3 weeks following your operation. It is important to continue to take any medication recommended by your surgeon after the procedure.
